Box Cars and One Eyed Jacks! Math Games Part 1! Giveaway!!

The summer after my first year of teaching... I was able to attend my district's Summer Math Institute. The Summer Math Institute is 3 full days of math training, common core ideas, and lessons! One of the days, we had a full day training from Box Cars and One Eyed Jacks!
The trainer, Jane Felling, is full of energy and awesome ideas! She uses cards, dice, dominoes, and other manipulatives to play math games! The math games help our kiddos practice their math facts and fluency while raising their self esteem in math.
I am such a big believer that I asked Jane if I would be able to blog about some games that I have used with my kiddos and summer school classes! She said yes so here I go!!!
Today, I will go over 1 game that I have experience with and next week I will go over 1 more game and so on! When I have practiced more games {when school starts} I will blog about them, too!
I will post pictures of samples {feel free to pin} and how-to's!
Jane has different books with a TON of games!!! These are some from her Shuffling into Math book! These games are AWESOME because you can differentiate them sooo easily in your classroom. I will show you how! So easy! I have played the games with grades K-5!
{this is mine...all tabbed up}
Before I begin explaining the first game, I would love to give you some tips on the management aspect of dice, cards, and dominoes! These are very similar to using any manipulative in your classroom!

Ok, if you have any questions, comment below!
I will be going over the game that I LOVE and I always start off with!
Face-Off
Supplies: Cards
Face Off: You might recognize this game. It is called WAR most of the time. Jane calls it Face Off! I love the name Face Off because the word WAR just doesn't sound nice to me! My kiddos LOVE the game Face Off.
How to play: Shuffle the cards and split the deck in half. Depending on the skill you are working on, you will flip a certain amount of cards. For example, if you are practicing the skill of comparing numbers {single digit}, you would each flip 1 card! See the picture below!
Player 1 would use their "Math Talk" and say a complete sentence like "9 is a greater number than 8." I ALWAYS have my kiddos say their "Math Talk". Then, player 1 would keep the 2 cards that they were comparing.
One of the rules is that if they don't say their "Math Talk" and just grab the cards, their partner can call the Math Talk Rule and lose their cards {the cards that they just won}. Your students do NOT want to lose their cards and you better believe that they are using their math talk! Even the big kids (5th graders).
When your kiddos flip over their cards and they are the same, they have to say FACE OFF really loud and clap their hands together! They love doing it and I tell them that I like to hear when they have a Face Off and the only way I'll know is when I hear it!
In a Face Off, each player has to put down 3 cards facing down. Once they have the 3 cards facing down, they will flip another one and see who has the biggest card {again, I'm using the example of playing the game using the skill of comparing numbers}. The player with the biggest number would win ALL of the cards that were put down! Again, they would have to be using their math talk!
The players will keep flipping cards, comparing numbers, and saying their math talk until one friend has all of the cards.
Variations of Face Off:
Comparing Numbers: using 1 card {single digit numbers}, 2 cards {double digit numbers}, etc. Smallest/biggest number wins.
Addition: flip 2 cards and add them together, biggest/smallest sum wins. Flip 4 cards making 2 double digit numbers, add together.
Subtraction: flip 2 cards, identify the biggest card, and subtract the other card from the biggest card.
I tried explaining this game well but if you have any questions, please comment below!
Multiplication: flip 2 cards, multiply together, smallest/biggest product wins.
Plus many more!!!
Now, If you've read through my WHOLE post, you are in for a treat! I asked Jane if she would be willing to donate something for a giveaway and she blew me away! She sent me a set of mesh bags, 10 decks of her mini cards, and 100 dice!! WHOOOO!!! So I will be throwing this awesome giveaway!!
I have 2 sets!! 2 winners will each win 5 small mesh bags, 5 decks of mini cards, and 50 dice!
10 die-in-die {clear ones with a mini die inside! my fave!}, 10 of the 12-sided dice, 10 of the 20-sided dice, 10 of the 10-sided dice, and 10 of the operations dice {+,-,x, and division!}!!!
(If you post about the giveaway, I would love for you to use the image above!)

Monthly Behavior Charts for the 2012-2013 School Year!

I needed to get these done!!! Last year, I did them right before I needed them every month!! That got a little stressful at times so I decided to make them for the whole year!
These coordinate with my Superstar Classroom Behavior Chart that you can read more about {HERE}.
On {THIS} post (same as link above) you can also read about how I manage my student behavior charts! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! This worked VERY well for me last year and I can't wait to do it this year! :) Here is a peek at all that is included!
They are all different and have a corresponding theme every month! Last year, my kiddos would be sooo excited to get a NEW behavior chart for the month and they would even guess {amongst themselves} what kind of pictures {clip art} was going to be on it!! Soo Cute!! :)
You can download them {HERE} for FREE!!

Yesterday was the AZ Bloggy Meet Up! I got to meet some pretty fabulous people IN PERSON! I was sooo nervous haha! I will blog about the meet up as soon as I get more pictures of it but let me leave you with this BEAUTY! haha or should I say BEAST???
HAHA! This pic CrAcKs me UP!!!
Have a fabulous Wednesday! I get to plan with my teammates today at 11! I go back to "work" in 20 days! Eeek!

Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards Checklists!

I bet you are all like "what?? checklists!"
Haha as these are specific to Arizona! Even more specific to ELL teachers.
I breathe these ELP standards in my SEI classroom {all ELL} so I decided to make myself some checklists for every performance indicator! These are going to be soooo helpful! I'm soooo excited to be finished with them!
Ah!!! Soooo pretty! Here is what is included!
Arizona ELL & SEI teachers, you are probably thinking this...

Guided Math {Chapter 2} + 4 on the Fourth

I'm so behind on this book study but I'm loving all of the ideas! Here is my take on Chapter 2: Using Guided Math to Create a Classroom Environment of Numeracy! These are some snippets from my Post-Its all over my book :)

Teach the students "how" to think: This is essential if we want our kiddos to succeed in math! We need to teach them why they are doing certain things {maybe borrowing in subtraction} so that they KNOW what they are doing! We need to teach them how to be problem solvers and connect to the real world! Such a challenging thing to do in our limited math time!

Organized classroom: Everything needs to be labeled and easy to reach! I definitely need to organize and label my manipulatives so that my kiddos can go and grab them whenever they need!

Numeracy filled room: The book says that when you walk into a room... you will most likely see a ton of literacy/reading stuff {word walls, trick words, writing, vocabulary walls, etc} but hardly any math! We need to post math vocabulary, math anchor charts, etc. This is sooo true! I always have all of my literacy charts up and ready... but hardly any math stuff! I plan on using my math vocabulary word cards and having a "math" wall!

Math talk: Developing and using math language is how our students will be able to understand and figure things out by themselves! Having them talk out their problem solving skills is essential... especially with Common Core!

Math ability is not genetic: The book states that sometimes parents excuse their kids' poor math skills because they weren't that good in math when they were their age! We have to explain to our kids and our parents that math skills are not genetic!! That all of our kids can succeed!

Student Notebooks: Student notebooks are a great reference that students can use to look back to what they have learned! I plan on using composition books for student math notebooks and record "notes" and glue in foldables... so if we need to go back and reteach a skill... it will all be there!

Foundational Principles of Guided Math:
  • All students can learn mathematics.
  • A numeracy-rich environment promotes mathematical learning by students.
  • Learning at its best is a social process
  • Learning mathematics is a constructive process.
  • An organized classroom environment supports the learning process.
  • Modeling and think-alouds, combined with ample opportunities for guided and then independent problem solving and purposeful conversations, create a learning environment in which students' mathematical understanding grows.
  • Ultimately, students are responsible for their learning!
Questions for this chapter:
  1. Look back at the Foundational Principles of Guided Math. Which do you think are the two most important of these principles? Why? How does your classroom reflect those?
The two most important are that all students can learn mathematics and that an organized classroom environment supports the learning process. These are important because ALL students can learn maybe just different ways and because you need to be able to focus on learning and the lesson not at disorganization!!! :) I feel that in my classroom, I show my students that they can all learn! All of my math manipulatives are in a designated spot... they aren't labeled but I'm working on that!

     2. Do you think your students feel that they are members of a mathematical learning community? If so, how did you establish that feeling of community? If not, what can you do to create it?

I think my students felt that they were members of a mathematical learning community because we all worked together {whole group}, in groups, and with partners. We also all practiced our chants together. My students felt comfortable with one another because we had all worked together as a classroom family!

    3. Look at your classroom through the eyes of a new student. Walking into your class, what would he or she see that would indicate the importance of mathematics?

A new student would see some addition and subtraction anchor charts, they would hear math chants being said, cubbies full of manipulatives... but that's about it! I would love to add a math wall and more vocabulary!

Wooh! That was long! :) This chapter was full of fun stuff I would like to implement so I will also link up with Ms. M from Ms. M's Blog!

For her 4 on the Fourth linky party! Write about 4 things you plan to do this year!!

  1. Start a math wall!!  I would love to incorporate anchor charts and vocabulary stations! I would also love to start PowerPix walls {a la WBT!!}
  2. Student Notebooks!!! Last year, I started the year with notebooks and it wasn't pretty! I plan to use composition books and pre printed "notes" in the beginning when my student's writing still is kinder writing! I also plan to include foldables from the beginning!
  3. Keep my room organized!!! I stayed countless hours last year trying to maintain my room... it worked for a while but towards the end, my room looked BAD!! I got rid of my desk and then my poor horseshoe table got all of my papers and mess!! I need to find a better way to organize!
  4. Organizational binders for my kids!!! I am almost done with my kiddos organizational binders! They are so cute and I can't wait to use these so that my kiddos can begin to learn how to stay organized! I am also not fond of those paper folders that are ripped by the end of the first week of school!!
So those are my four things that I WILL implement for this upcoming year! Thanks Ms. M for this awesome linky! It has made some of my goals a lot more concrete!! :)

July {Currently}

I just finished summer school on Thursday and just realized that I have 29 days of summer for myself!!!
It has gone way too fast!
My first contract day is on the 31st of THIS MONTH!!!
Ah!! I really need to buckle down and work on all of the school projects that I have planned!! :)
I love The Giving Tree. My kids are always wondering why the boy always just asks and asks and they realize that he might have been a little selfish! :) It is an eye-opener for them!
I'm reading Guided Math. I am working on Chapter 2 blog post so look for that tomorrow!
Off to get ready for the pool! Can you believe I haven't taken my little one swimming this summer? I feel super bad so I'm going to take her today!!!
Have a super Tuesday!
